Tanglewood Shagya Farms
Purebred Shagya Horses
Tanglewood Shagya Farms located in Montana and owned by Frank and Arlene Michaud.
The Shagya is bred Internationally, using a base of purebred Shagya mares. The breed was developed from the Arab-bred ("Araberrasse" in German) horses from the Austro-Hungarian stud farms of Babolna and Radautz. Although the breed has a relatively high percentage of purebred Arabian blood, Shagyas should be clearly different from purebred Arabian's in type, size, substance, and bone. Of the 16 ancestors in the fourth generation, no more than 9 can be purebred Arabian and the rest must be Shagyas.
The breeding goal is a substantial Arab-bred horse which is suitable for everyone as an elegant riding driving horse. The Shagya should be beautiful and harmonious, with an expressive head, well formed neck, a good topline, a long pelvis, a well-carried tail, and strong, dry correct legs. Free, springy, elastic and correct action in all three gaits is very important. Wither height should be at least 15 to 16 hands and cannon bone circumference should be a minimum of 7 inches.
The frame should be rectangular. The square frame (as tall as long) is not welcomed. The chest should be broad and well-muscled. The depth of the girth and barrel should harmonize with the frame. The hindquarters should be well-muscled and broad. The cannons and shannons should be short in relation to the forearm and gaskin. The pasterns should be of medium length.
The Shagya should be physically and mentally capable of being a completely efficient and superior family, leisure, competition, hunting, and endurance horse.
Frank and Arlene are proud owners of Purebred Shagyas and are members of the North American Shagya Arabian Society (NASS).
